The Kühtai was first mentioned as “Chutay” in the land tax register of the Counts of Tyrol around 1280. Emperor Maximilian I acquired hunting rights in Kühtai in 1497. The construction of a princely hunting lodge began around 1622. To make it easier to reach, a road was created through the Sellraintal in 1624. Today's “Hotel Jagdschloss Kühtai” still essentially shows the form in which it was built on behalf of Archduke Leopold by “Jakob Stöckhl, care manager as gewöster pawmeister” (inscription on the base beam of the roof gable).
In 1888, polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen crossed Greenland on skis. His travel report, published a little later, triggered the first ski boom in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. But it was only the book “Die Lilienfelder Skilauf – Technik”, written in 1897 by the Austrian ski pioneer Mathias Zdarsky, that gave the decisive impetus to the development of alpine skiing. With the technology described therein, it was possible for the first time to descend the steepest slopes in a serpentine line.
It was around 1905 when German, Swiss and Austrian ski clubs came together under the umbrella organization of the Central European Ski Association and state authorities in Austria-Hungary also became increasingly interested in winter sports. And just a short time later, in 1909, the Kühtai was discovered and developed as a ski area.
The then responsible k.u.k. The Ministry of Labor and Agriculture finally offered the prospect of financial subsidies for the expansion of the winter sports resorts. The ski pioneer Willy R. Rickmers, owner of a shipping company in Hamburg, was appointed as an expert advisor and traveled to the states of Tyrol and Voralberg during the seasons, sometimes accompanied by the Count of Meran.
He inspected Kühtai in April 1909 and was thrilled. The Tiroler Landzeitung proudly reported at the time that a new ski area could be developed and managed that would confidently hold its own alongside Swiss resorts.
